We are all aware of the need to use eco-friendly products and use less of our natural resources. The best way to go green is to recycle and reuse creatively. But you can buy new and still be gentle to the Earth if you follow eco-friendly decorating tips.
Wood
Purchase wood which is grown in a local forest, so it doesn’t have to travel long distances. Choose woods which are made out of responsibly forested materials. Look out for the FSC symbol. ‘Green’ woods are insurance for your kids future. Nearly half of the world’s original forests have been cut down with another 40 million acres vanishing every year.
Paint
Paint with eco-friendly paint which have no VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). The chemicals evaporate at room temperature and have no strong fumes — no waiting required.
Glass and Metal
Glass and metal can be recycled over and over again without losing any quality. Using recycled glass and metal helps reduce the amount of resources needed to produce new glass and metal.
Textiles
The main things to consider when choosing an eco friendly textiles is how renewable the product is, whether the product is dyed or if natural dyes are used, and whether a lot of chemicals are required to produce it. Some of the eco friendly textile choices include organic cotton, wool and hemp. Organic cotton costs more than conventional cotton, but it’s better for the environment and farm workers, as it is grown without the use of most conventional pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or genetic engineering.
Furniture
When you choose your furniture, be carefull on the material it is made from, how it is processed and what finishes have been used. Consider buying second hand furniture or items made from recycled or reclaimed material.
